New Year’s Eve Events for Southwest Florida

December 19th, 2013

Fort Myers Beach New years eve

New Year’s Eve 2013 in Southwest Florida includes events, parties, fireworks and even snow! With so much going on, choosing what to do is going to be a difficult task for sure. Plenty of bars and restaurants will be hosting their own New Year’s Eve events, but if you’re in the mood for something special, here is a list of area events that will ring in the New Year in grand fashion.

Fort Myers Beach New Year’s Eve

Come celebrate the birthday of the Town of Fort Myers Beach and New Year’s Eve at Time Square. The town’s 17th annual birthday party takes place from 1pm to 3pm with free live music, brownies, and cupcakes. More live music kicks in at 7pm to start the New Year’s celebration, which culminates with fireworks from the pier as well as the ball drop.

Be aware the bridge will be closed ONLY to oncoming traffic from midnight to 1:30am during the fireworks.

Naples New Year’s Eve Events

Celebrate the New Year Naples style with an evening of music, fun, fireworks and even snow! Third Street South comes alive to welcome 2014. The fireworks display will take place at the Naples Pier and starts at 7:30pm, leaving plenty of time for an early dinner before or a more elegant affair afterwards. And the earlier timing allows children a chance to partake in the celebration.

There will be live music at Fleischmann Courtyard and at many of the open-air restaurants in the Third Street South area.

Look for the snow to fall around 8:15pm. I know a lot of people come to Naples to escape the snow up north, but they all look forward to this time of the year just so they can watch it “snow” in downtown Naples. It might not be completely real, but the effect is beautiful and definitely something worth seeing!

Downtown Fort Myers New Year’s Eve

Presented by the River District Alliance, the annual Fort Myers New Year’s Eve Downtown Countdown helps tens of thousands of local revelers ring in the New Year in style. The 17th annual event starts at 8pm with live musical acts on multiple stages, a craft beer garden, and much more. A Kids Zone will feature bounce houses, ball pits, an obstacle course, giant slides, a rock climbing wall, and balloon typhoon.

As midnight approaches, the main stage will feature a countdown and a New Year’s Eve ball drop. When the clock strikes midnight a dazzling fireworks display will light up the sky over the Caloosahatchee River. The bands and DJs play long after the display, entertaining crowds until as late as 2am.

If you are in Southwest Florida for New Year’s Eve, have a great time enjoying the events and the warm Florida weather. We invite you stay at one of our six area hotels and resorts so you can be close to these wonderful New Year’s Eve events. Have a great 2014 and we hope to see you soon!

DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa Is Honored With ConventionSouth’s Annual Readers’ Choice Award

October 28th, 2013

ConventionSouth Readers Choice AwardGULF SHORES, Ala. (Oct. 22, 2013)—It is with honor that the publishers and editors of ConventionSouth, the national multimedia resource for planning events in the South, present DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa with a 2013 Readers’ Choice Award.

“ConventionSouth readers and fans have voted to decide the best meeting sites in the South, and it is no surprise to us that DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa has been selected to receive our annual Readers’ Choice Award,” said ConventionSouth Publisher J. Talty O’Connor. “The value in receiving this prestigious recognition is that it comes from the United States’ top meeting professionals who hold events in the South. These planners demand the highest level of customer service and quality facilities, and they have contributed in determining that DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa indeed displays the commitment to professionalism, creativity and service that they require.”

DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa is among 150 convention and visitor bureaus (CVBs), meeting facilities and hotels located across the South to receive this year’s Readers’ Choice Award. Throughout the year, meeting professionals nominated the meeting sites they believe provide exemplary service for group events. The nominated sites are then compiled onto an online ballot where meeting professionals and fans are asked to vote for the best of the best. More than 6,500 voters participated this year in the selection process – the highest vote count ever recorded.

Since creation in 2001, this is the second time that DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa has received the award, making it an even greater honor to present it with a 2013 Readers’ Choice Award.DiamondHead Beach Resort & Spa will be featured as an award recipient in the December 2013 Awards Issue of ConventionSouth magazine. This exciting issue will also showcase some of the most talented meeting professionals in the nation as ConventionSouth also presents planners with its annual “Meeting Professionals To Watch” designation. “Featuring peer advice and trade secrets from our Meeting Professionals to Watch in 2014, our Awards Issue is one of the most popular must-read resources within the meetings industry,” O’Connor said.

Celebrating over 30 years as a leading meeting planning resource, ConventionSouth magazine is based in Gulf Shores, Ala., and is distributed to more than 18,000 meeting professionals located across the country who book meetings held within the South, according to O’Connor.

The Fort Myers Beach Mound House

September 17th, 2013

mound house fort myers beach

When driving over the Fort Myers Beach Bridge you see brightly colored hotels, unique shops and lively restaurants. Everything looks shiny and new, but if you know where to look, visitors can experience the historic side of Fort Myers Beach. If you know where to look you’ll discover the oldest standing structure on the island, which happens to sit on an ancient Calusa Indian shell mound. If you know where to look you’ll discover the Fort Myers Beach Mound House.

History

The Mound House is Estero Island’s oldest standing structure. The building first started out as a Tudor style home constructed by William and Milia Case in 1906. The modest home grew and changed over the years starting in 1909, then again in 1921 and again when it was owned by William and Florence Long in 1951 to 1994. The Town of Fort Myers Beach acquired the Mound House from the Long Estate in 2000 and is currently in the process of restoring the house to its 1921 grandeur with grant assistance from the Florida Department of State Division of Historical Resources.
